● Integrated Programmes: Combining Foróige's structured leadership curriculum with hands-on leadership experiences at sea.

Congratulations to Daniel Concannon who is the winner of a 2024 Sail Training Ireland Special Contribution Award. Daniel is pictured receiving his award at the recent Annual Awards ceremony from Lord Mayor of Dublin Emma Blain and Commander Brian Mathews of the Irish Navy.
The citation from the ceremony is below:
Daniel truly made a remarkable impression during his time on the Pelican of London His enthusiasm for sailing and eagerness to learn are inspiring. He not only engaged with the workings of the boat, especially in the engine room under the guidance of the engineer but also brought humour and joy to the experience for everyone aboard.
It's clear that Daniel is not just a trainee but someone who embodies the spirit of sailing—his involvement with the Sea Scout troop and the Galway Hooker Sailing Club shows his commitment to the maritime community. The fact that he was allowed to start the engine himself is a significant milestone and a testament to the trust and skills he gained during his time onboard Pelican.
His love for sea shanties adds a delightful touch to his journey, reflecting the camaraderie and tradition of sailing culture. He has the potential to have a lasting career at sea,

Jim O’Grady has had a major impact on Sail Training Ireland and we would like to thank him for all that he has done for us.
As an advisor to former Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, Jim ensured that those at the very top in the Government were aware of the positive work of Sail Training Ireland.
He also helped us make some terrific contacts that helped us with all aspects of the charity’s work.

Congratulations to Sophie Byrne who is the winner of a 2024 Sail Training Ireland Special Contribution Award. Sophie is pictured receiving her award at the recent Annual Awards ceremony from Lord Mayor of Dublin Emma Blain and Commander Brian Mathews of the Irish Navy.
The citation from the ceremony is below:
While on a voyage she helped her mentor set up TikTok and also gave her tips on how to make TikToks so she is the person responsible if you found yourself on any of last year’s TikToks.
On top of that she was like the boat mammy she looked after her crew and fellow trainees to name but a few of her mammy duties we often seen her at the back of the boat washing and styling the boys hair and making sure all were looking good for any photo opportunity on our Energia voyage.
Sophie was a very caring person a grafter always there to jump in and cover watches if any of her fellow trainees had sea sickness. She took on the responsibility of keeping an eye out when on shore leave as one of the trainees was type 1 diabetic (who required monitoring) and when he was not watched over by Anita, Sophie took over that role when on shore to make sure all was well with him.
We found her a very mature teenager she also took care of her mentors yet again with the decent cups of teas as the fellow trainee’s tea making skills were very poor. She would oversee galley duties and would help and give advice to the boys on how to cook as for a lot of them it was their first time to be let loose in a galley. When other trainees were struggling, she would quietly bring it to the attention of the mentors. Jack is a wonderful young man
He showed compassion, noticing when fellow trainees felt a bit down and sat with them for a chat.
He has a kind heart and always willing to lend a helping hand
Whether on Galley duty, the rigging, the bowsprit or happy hour he was as willing to help as he was willing to learn and looking for ways to improve.
On watch, he asked questions and was interested in learning and was a valuable asset to his watch.

Congratulations to Conor Moran who is the 2024 Sail Training Ireland Trainee of the Year. Conor is pictured receiving his award at the recent Annual Awards ceremony from Lord Mayor of Dublin Emma Blain and Commander Brian Matthews of the Irish Navy. Conor's Nominating Organisation for his Ocean Science Voyage was Foroige Mayo.

The citation from the ceremony is below:
This is in recognition of his outstanding help he gave mentors with his peers while on the voyage. We found him very supportive when it came to explaining to some of the other trainees that we might all look the same from the outside but that's not always the way and while we had some Trainees who needed some extra support Conor was quick to pick up on it and then he explained to some of his fellows trainees that some people need a different way to be managed . We were pleasantly surprised to see a young man of his years display this level of maturity.
He was always there to lend a helping hand to his senior Mentors getting them up and over the gunnel and helping us on and off the ship and up and down the scary rope ladder. He was there to make the much needed endless cups of Tea while on watch. He was so polite and well mannered.
We could always depend on Conor to jump in when we need the much-needed muscle power when it came to hauling in the tender along with many other jobs.
What we loved about Conor was he knew his own mind if any of his fellow Trainees were involved in something they should not be he was strong enough to be able to walk away from them.
We found he grew from being a very shy person to a much more confident young man by the end of the week.

Trainees who made outstanding contributions to the Sail Training voyages organised in 2024 by the charity Sail Training Ireland were recognised at the Annual Awards Ceremony at the Mansion House, courtesy of the Lord Mayor Emma Blain (on Saturday 8th February 2025).
The award winners were among the 356 trainees who sailed on voyages aboard six different tall ships last year. Since 2011, almost 4,000 young people from all backgrounds and abilities have availed of the opportunities thanks to funding provided by the charity Sail Training Ireland (STIrl) to participate in training and self-development programmes. These are designed to offer a change perspective, attitude, and behaviour leading to self-confidence, motivation, and the acquisition of new skills.
Trainees include young people from youth and community Groups, residential care homes, Garda Diversion Projects, and Schools, drug rehabilitation programmes, asylum seekers and young people with visual, hearing, and physical impairments from across Ireland.
The highlights of Sail Training Ireland’s planned programmes in 2025 will include:
• Partnership with Foroige Leadership for Life Programme.
• Asgard Armada Voyage featuring three vessels and over thirty trainees.
• Erasmus+ Youth Exchange between Ireland and Malta.
• Two STEM at Sea voyages incorporating ocean science at sea training workshops.
• Thirty young people from Dublin’s North-East inner city participating as part of the Taoiseach’s taskforce NEIC project.
• Regional sail training schemes in Drogheda, Cork, Dublin, Galway, Arklow, Derry, Belfast, Wexford, and Waterford.
• Cross Border voyages including young people North and South.
The Department of Defence, Dublin City Council and Dublin Port Company continue to support the charity to make this opportunity accessible to all young people.

Sail Training Ireland achieves Erasmus+ Accreditat

Sail Training Ireland achieves Erasmus+ Accreditation

We are delighted to share the great news that we have just been approved for Accreditation with Erasmus+. We are thrilled as a lot of hard work has gone into achieving this, and it was our third attempt!

Thanks to all at Leargas (the National agency for Erasmus+), who helped us and in particular Kay McCabe.

Over the past ten years we have received Erasmus + funding to run successful Youth Exchanges. Accreditation takes us to the next level.

Accreditation shows that the organisation can organise high-quality European activities and plans to organise them regularly. It means a stable source of funding for the whole duration of the Programme (until 2027), a simplified application procedures in response to Erasmus+ calls, as well as a quicker evaluation process. Accreditation is awarded until the end of the programme period . This means that funding is available for the entire programme period. In this way, Accreditation enables long-term and strategic planning and international cooperation with our EU partners.

In real terms it means STIrl can make the life changing opportunity of a sail training voyage to more young people in Ireland and in the EU.

Because of demand, we are now running a second under 18s Drogheda Sail Training Bursary voyage in 2025 This voyage will start and finish in Drogheda, from June 09th - June 13th 2025 on the Brian Boru. The voyage is open to young people between 14-17, who live in or engage with services in Drogheda and the surrounding Louth/Meath area.
